"Hierographica"

This piece was originally conceived in 1988. At that time, a friend of mine was convinced that in pre-historic time, aliens had visited the Earth and seeded humanity with the foundation for language and civilization. From Stonehenge, the Nazca Lines and Pyramidology through Egyptian and Mayan hieroglyphs to crop circles of today, the "evidence" was compelling. To me, this was just pseudoarchaeology but it was fun. I used it as a thought experiment and whether true or not, I wondered about the aliens' original language. What could have been the fundamental basis for all of human writing and what would it look like? I created a silkscreen print to show how this alien language spawned human visual imagery.

"Bewildered by Technology"

The idea for this self portrait came from a graphic I created in the 1980's to represent the concept of artificial intelligence (click here to see the image). Then it was the idea that a computer or robotic intelligence might challenge human intelligence like in the film "2001 A Space Odyssey" or beat us at our own games like chess or Jeopardy. In the years since then, the concept has changed somewhat in the sense that we are now developing artificial intelligence in our smart phones (Siri) and cars (self-parking and GPS) to enhance our user experience. And yesterday, Google announced the development of the "Google Glass Project" which takes this concept one step further. At what point does this digital technology and humanity start to merge? If it does, how will if effect us?

"Technology Enhancing the User Experience"

Using the techniques I developed in my self-portrait (above), I made a portrait of my daughter Kiley. Only this time, I left out the sinister undertones of the original theme and just had fun with it. Kiley's generation naturally embraces technology, using it to enhance their user experience.
